Common Hot Water System Valves:
Tempering Valve/ Temperature Control Valve (TCV):
- The Tempering Valve is responsible for regulating the temperature (50deg) of hot water supplied sanitary fixtures in a property such as; showers, bathroom taps, and baths. Installation for a tempering valve is mandatory for new hot water system installs.
- Tempering Valves blend hot water from the hot water system with cold water from the main supply, ensuring a safe and consistent water temperature to prevent scalding and maintain user comfort, essentially limiting the water temperature to 50 degrees Celsius
- Tempering Valves are essential in reducing the risk of hot water burns, especially for vulnerable persons such as children and the elderly
- Tempering Valves have components that may fail causing the water temperature to be inconsistent or reduce the flow of water, these components are; Integral non return valves & Filters
Pressure-Reducing Valve (PRV):
- The Pressure-Reducing Valve is used to control and maintain a steady, safe water pressure within the hot water system.
- PRVs are particularly crucial in areas where water pressure from the mains is excessively high, as they prevent damage to plumbing fixtures and appliances and ensure a smooth, consistent water flow.
- Common problems with PRVs are that they can get clogged with debris causing reduced flow and often resulting in replacement
Expansion Control Valve (ECV):
- An Expansion Control Valve is designed to reduce the pressure buildup caused from water expansion during a typical hot water system heating cycle. It is advised by hot water system manufacturers that an ECV be installed on the supply line for cold water. This will reduce energy consumption and lengthen the lifespan of the pressure temperature relief valve (PTR) since cold water, not hot water, will be released during the heating cycle. It is advised that an ECV is replaced every 4 years
Pressure & Temperature Relief Valve (PTR):
- The Pressure & Temperature Relief Valve, also known as the Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve (TPR valve), is a safety device that automatically releases water if the temperature or pressure within the hot water system exceeds safe limits.
- TPTR Valves prevent the risk of explosion or catastrophic failure in the hot water tank due to excessive temperature or pressure buildup. It is essential that the PTR valve is operated regularly to ensure the valve is working as it should. Common problems that occur is that PTR valve may continuously leak, which requires the PTR valve to be replaced.
-
Non Return Isolating Valve/ Duo Valve:
- Duo valves are used to shut off or isolate specific sections of the hot water system for maintenance, repair, or emergency situations. Duo Valves are also known as Non-Return isolating valves, which conveniently allow isolation of a hot water system with an integral backflow prevention device
- These valves allow technicians to work on a specific part of the system without shutting down the entire hot water supply.
